Chapter 185 A Close Call
Chapter 185 A Close Call
Since clothes could be hung out to dry, that meant there definitely was a way leading to the rooftop.
Thinking this, Gao Feng immediately made a decision.
"Go up."
The two Hunters at the stairwell entrance heard this, and instinctively wanted to retreat, but as soon as they started to lower their guns, another dozen zombies poured in from outside, crowding towards the stairs.
Seeing this, a deeper sense of despair painted everyone else's faces.
This couldn't go on.
The gunfire kept sounding continuously.
And what the zombies were most sensitive to was precisely the sense of hearing. Attracted by the noise, more and more zombies were gathering here until they would occupy every bit of space inside the building.
But if the gunfire stopped even for a moment, the already overcrowded staircase would be filled anew with zombies in no time.
Then, what chance would they have to escape with their lives?
As everyone was in a state of panic, the three people at the front already seemed unable to bear the pressure. One of them yelled at the top of his voice:
"Think of something, quick!"
"We're about to run out of bullets!"
Even though they were conserving ammunition as much as they could, adopting a strategy of shooting in short bursts and sweeping fire, they still couldn't withstand the onslaught of so many zombies.
Each person had only brought four magazines of ammunition when they set out.
Now they were down to just one.
This ammunition wasn't all issued by the company; it was bought by the Hunters with their own earnings from the machinery factory. Otherwise, according to the Combat Department's rules, each person could only take a maximum of two magazines of ammunition.
The guards responsible for protecting the entrances and checkpoints of the safe zones even had a quota of just one magazine.
Combat teams that regularly carried out missions outside had two magazines.
The Hunter Squad had the most.
But no matter how much ammunition one had, it wasn't meant to be consumed like this!
After all, this was bought with their hard-earned money!
Normally, firing it off didn't matter much, because capturing a mutant or a Mutant Beast was a profitable deal, ensuring that the leftover vouchers after restocking on ammo were enough to afford a few encounters with women.
But the current situation was entirely different, every bullet fired was for their very survival!
Once the ammunition was gone, so were their lives!
How could they not be anxious?
Gao Feng was also very nervous inside, but she was acutely aware that everyone could panic except for her.
The moment she, the team leader, became flustered, the people below would immediately lose their will to resist, and without the zombies even needing to surge upwards, their morale would crumble on its own.
And so, the woman could only keep chanting in her mind: don't panic, don't panic.
Meanwhile, her gaze swept continuously around the surroundings.
In their desperation, Gao Feng could only pull out her crooked knife to use as a bolt, slotting it into the door, while the remaining three subordinates frantically searched for something to use as a bridge.
The distance between the two buildings was over three meters, and the height from the ground was over ten meters.
Below was a writhing mass of figures, like swarms of bugs.
Bang bang bang!
Bang bang bang!
The narrow metal door suddenly began to shake violently!
The horde that had consumed the man to nearly nothing had, after all, set their sights on the four people on the rooftop!
The crooked knife wedged into the slot emitted a crisp, clicking sound with each forceful impact, which in the ears of the people sounded like the ticking of a countdown to their lives!
Once, twice, thrice...
The knife was sturdy.
But the lock on the side of the metal door couldn't hold on any longer.
This building had been constructed nearly ten years ago, and the iron door had been there for over five, bearing mottled rust marks from the wind and sun.
Gao Feng's mood sank ever lower.
The rooftop on the other side seemed within reach.
But the mere distance of just over three meters had become an insurmountable chasm.
She was suddenly reminded of that man's words: "Jiangbei District is yours to take care of from now on."
Unfortunately, she hadn't yet fulfilled her promise to him.
And now she was about to die.
Just as the woman's thoughts started to drift across the great river, an excited shout came from someone nearby, "I found it! Quick, let's try with this plank!"
Gao Feng immediately looked towards the source of the voice, to see her three subordinates cautiously extending something towards the opposite rooftop.
It appeared to be a plank of wood torn from the top.
The length was just about right.
But the thickness—
Before Gao Feng finished her thought, the three subordinates began to shout loudly their way, "Captain, quick, let's go to the other side!"
Simultaneously, a massive force suddenly struck from behind her!
The overburdened metal door flew off its hinges!
Gao Feng staggered and almost fell to the ground, looking up to realize she was right at the edge of the makeshift wooden bridge, with someone already crossing it.
The creaking and groaning sounds it made were truly terrifying.
But there was no time for fear!
She wasn't ready to die!
