Chapter 285: Mewtwo
Chapter 285: Mewtwo
Mewtwo scowled as he once again failed to crush the black crystal of the worm he was wrestling with, leaving him open to a lashing from the Mega Gyarados’ spiny sail.“Insolent cretin!” His mind pulsated with fury, but to little effect. Normally, Pokemon and humans alike would be cowering in his presence. But the opponents he was facing had no mind to affect. Worst, even. The minds of Team Rocket’s abominable experiments had been twisted beyond the bounds of insanity, reducing their brains to mere fleshy amalgamations of agony and hatred.
There was nothing that Mewtwo could do to them that was in any way worse than what they were already suffering. Even attempting to pry into those tortured minds was a danger because he risked being contaminated by the madness himself.
Mewtwo was a Psychic, probably the strongest in the world, and capable of crushing sentient minds with a mere thought. However, when faced with the faux Mega Pokemon, his options were limited to Telekinesis or pure brute force as he repeatedly threw broken constructs at his opponent and bombard it with Type Energy of various elements.
But the Mega Gyarados did not care about the pain. Not impervious, just too saturated with it. Every blow Mewtwo landed but a drop in the pond of their constant agony.
“Are you alright, Mewtwo?!”
Then came the concerned hollering of his ‘ally’ which, Mewtwo had to begrudgingly admit, was a welcomed repose.
“Pay attention to your own struggles, human!” He retorted. Ash Ketchum and his cadre were likewise busy with their own battles; his Greninja contending with the Mega Houndoom all on his own, while the Pikachu and Dragonite were harassing the cyborg Archer atop his Mega Aerodactyl.
Mewtwo vaguely remembered Ash and his meddlesome ways, but he had not expected the boy-now-man to get involved with this affair as well. He couldn’t help but wonder, was the young man’s presence also the will of his capricious ‘progenitor’?
The plan was working. Under Ash’s assault, Archer’s abominable Pokemon were sluggish, slow to react, being that the cyborg needed to split his attention. And regardless of whatever enhancements they made to Archer’s piddly human brain, there was simply no way that a single individual could control so many berserking Mega Pokemon simultaneously.
It was just that Mewtwo was failing to fulfill his share of the burden — a fact that irked him to no end.
“DOOOOSSS!!!” The mindless beast interrupted the Legendary’s rapidly spinning thoughts with a roar and he barely got out of the way of its reckless thrashing.
Mewtwo scowled, his mind seething in rage. “You leave me no choice!” He hadn't wanted to resort to this power. His pride as a Pokemon, his resentment towards his origins, they all shackled him. But if he kept dallying, that man would escape his grasp once more.
Even now, Mewtwo could feel that extradimensional rift widening by the second. “Not again! Today is the day… Giovanni will die by MY HANDS!!!”
The Legendary-tier Psychic howled and reached deep within him to reopen that connection he had shuttered. The gemstone that the girl delivered to him pulsated, and he could feel that repugnant presence lurking on the other side — the one remaining shackle binding his life and the only thing that was keeping his body from breaking apart once more.
Mewtwo’s light pierced through the Darkness enshrouding them and his mind expanded. His Miracle Eye sharpened, piercing deeper into the folds of reality than ever before. And he could see, see everything; the battle waging above the surface, armies of humans and Pokemon clashing amidst trees and sky, and that girl, Nina, and her shining Dragonite, their presence burning bright like the sun.
But more importantly, Mewtwo could see his quarry, deep within the bowels of the world; that man standing haughtily with a hand in his pocket, that insufferable smirk, that cocky visage and those soulless eyes.
However, underneath that imperious facade, Mewtwo could also sense the man’s fear, worry and myriad deep seated insecurities. Fear that fate had caught up to him once more, worry that his plans had gone awry before its fruition, and layers upon layers of childhood abuse and battlefield trauma contributing to a compulsive need for absolute control.
“GIOVANNIIIIII!!!”
Mewtwo’s rage ignited. And when the light subsided, there emerged a truly perfect Pokemon — a Mega Mewtwo Y as the girl had dubbed him. Then, in a blink, he vanished and emerged right by the crown of the Mega Gyarados.
Archer stiffened and his band of abominations shuddered in tandem. But before any of them could react, Mewtwo lashed out with the powerful tendril attached to his head, wrapped it around the Gyarados’s crystal antenna and shattered it with a twist.
The Mega Houndoom howled and pounced at Mewtwo in haste, completely ignoring the Water Shuriken that had struck his flank. All while the Mega Gyarados cried out in anguish and began lashing out against friend and foe alike — the final death throes of a dying beast.
However, before the infernal canine could get anywhere near Mewtwo, he Teleported once more. This time, right next to Archer and his Mega Aerodactyl.
Archer responded without delay, his forearms opening up to reveal some sort of bionic cannon while his Aerodactyl tried to retaliate with a Crunch.
None of them would have a chance to hit. Because the moment that Mewtwo reappeared, he slashed down with a Steel-imbued Psycho Cut and completely severed the Aerodactyl’s head from its torso.
Archer’s cannon discharged but veered wide as his Ride plummeted from the air.
“W-Wha?!” Meanwhile, Ash was just standing there mouth agape and at a complete loss for words. Everything had happened so quickly that he lacked the time to process that rapid sequence of events. One moment he was blinded, and the next, Mewtwo had morphed into some unfamiliar Pokemon and took down two of the faux Megas in a heartbeat.
“I leave that wretch and his cur in your hands.” Mewtwo said to him before vanishing in Extreme Speed down the sinkhole. The murderous Psychic was simply too anxious to finish off Archer and his remaining Mega Houndoom.
“Wait! Mewtwo!” Ash began scrambling to follow right as the entire base quaked and the ceiling broke, causing debris to rain down upon them and blocking his path — the bombardment of Nitey’s Super Hyper Nitey Cosmic Sapphire Meteor Scattershot Edition ft. the Genius and Unparalleled Insight of Espy the Beautiful had begun.
The debris was just an inconvenience, however. Because immediately after, Ash had to jump out of the way of a rampaging Gyarados while Greninja blocked an attack from the Mega Houndoom. Even Archer, despite looking like his limbs were all contorted wrong, had begun to rise like a puppet on strings.
That was the last that Mewtwo perceived of the battlefield he left behind before focusing his attention on his target below; Giovanni standing in front of a precariously unstable wormhole.
The Ultra Wormhole was just a mere slit at the moment, but definitely large enough for a human to squeeze through. What the villain planned to do after he crossed, Mewtwo did not know nor did he care to know. He just wanted to crush his skull with his bare hands.
Man-made structures collapsed all around Mewtwo as a couple bolts of Draconic Energy fell down into the sinkhole — likely wayward projectiles from that girl and her Mega Dragonite — and crashed into the steel beams and metal bridges holding some sort of device aloft.
A suction unit that harvested Infinity Energy and powered by a gargantuan chunk of black crystal, from what Mewtwo could tell. Not that it mattered in any way. The Ultra Wormhole was opened, and destroying the device would have little effect outside of slightly destabilizing it.
Mewtwo scowled. He could have teleported down in an instant, but it was too big a risk. Space was already starting to unravel in the sinkhole and trying to Teleport so close to an Ultra Wormhole was liable to tear him to shreds… or worse.
“No! He won’t get away this time!”
Just the thought of Giovanni escaping his grasp forevermore was enough to reignite Mewtwo’s fervour and pushed him to go faster beyond his limit. Until he eventually crashed down onto solid ground and came face to face with the wormhole in question, undulating, crackling and pulling at his every being like the angry gaze of Giratina.
In front of that wormhole, standing atop an extravagant mechanical platform, was Giovanni and a handful of his white-clad executives sneering down at him.
“Ahh… Mewtwo, welcome back. It is good of you to finally rejoin us on the eve of our departure.”
Giovanni’s voice was as detestable as ever, like Muk in Mewtwo’s ears. But he did not have the mind to dwell on it. Because soon, to Mewtwo’s dismay, his Mega form began to unravel, the Infinity Energy forcefully siphoned from his veins and into the Ultra Wormhole despite his resistance. And along with it was the vitality that the Psychic Pokemon had invested into the Mega Evolution, leaving him feeling weak and lethargic.
A sinister chuckle sounded and Mewtwo growled.
“Now that’s a familiar face. Though I wouldn’t scorn the thoughtful gift you brought me either...” Giovanni grinned. “After all, the stronger you are, the more useful you will be!”
The man cackled. “Rejoice, Mewtwo! For, together, we will embark on a journey to create the ultimate utopia… One free of meddlesome forces! A reality where we may hold fate in our own hands and mold it to our liking. A reality where we may become whomever we please!”
Giovanni spread his arms and gestured towards Ariana. “Do you wish for love?” and towards Dr. Namba. “A world without judgement?!” Then at Petrel. “A life of wealth? Free from worries?” And finally, he pointed towards Mewtwo, his face a sickening parody of kindness and warmth, betrayed only by those hollow grey eyes. “Or perhaps you only wish for a place where you can belong…”
The man cackled once more. “All of that and more can be yours beyond this portal — this gateway towards our unbridled future!”
It was all a lie, of course. Mewtwo had seen Giovanni’s inner thoughts. The wretched cur was secretly panicking inside and that nauseating glibness was yet another facade, a last resort to buy for time.
“In your dreams, Giovanni!!!”
However, before Mewtwo could respond, the lifeless corpse of a Mega Gyarados and a cascade of metal and rock came crashing down to send Giovanni and his subordinates tumbling towards the ground as the mechanical platform they were standing on collapsed.
In the aftermath, the gaping hole in reality was left suspended mid-air, wobbling and glaring. While Ash Ketchum, standing atop a pile of broken debris and a fainted Mega Houndoom, steadily rose with a cavalier grin on his face.
“Because your evil plan ends here!”
