Chapter 137 137: Greed Has No Religion
Some people brighten up a room just by leaving it.
As soon as the Emberlord accepted the student's proposal, the red haired man's smile vanished.
He left his chair and demanded something Coin wasn't expecting.
"Throw your Enforcers out of here first."
Kairon and Varikh clenched their fists.
"How dare you?" Kairon barked.
The student didn't register it.
Coin narrowed his eyes.
"I didn't accept your proposal completely, Leon Bronzers. I want to know why you want to hunt Zane Atlas? What do you want from this?"
At the Emberlord's words, Leon's thin smile came back and he sat on the chair again.
"The moment he awakened three Gleam tier skills, I was about to kill him. The simple thought of him breathing in the same room as me punctured my heart. His kind is toys for us. Shoes. Slippers. I like shoes but I won't put them in my head. He survived that day. And he survived today as well. But not anymore."
"So you want him to die just because he is a gutterborn and talked to you with disrespect?"
"No. That's also a reason, yes. But that's not the only one. It's something else."
"What?"
Leon stopped smiling. "His eyes."
Coin frowned.
Leon leaned forward.
"His eyes, Emberlord. They don't obey us. He listens. He acts. He bows. He kneels. He praises. But he doesn't obey. Inside his heart, he is angry at us and unlike the other filths, he is brave enough to fight for himself. That's why he needs to die."
The Emberlord said nothing.
Then he nodded.
Kairon was angry that Coin didn't scold the brat for disrespecting the Enforcers but at the same time, he agreed with Leon.
Zane Atlas wasn't afraid.
If he was, he wouldn't have slammed himself to Kairon. Or bit his leg.
"So you only want his death and nothing else?" Coin asked.
Leon shook his head.
"You also want his death. But since you can't prove him a thief and are bound by the constitution, I am giving you an opportunity to kill him in private. I am doing you a favor and I want something else in return."
"Stop dancing around houses, kid. Come to the point."
Leon slammed his palm on the table.
"I want the relic for myself."
The Emberlord jolted from his chair.
The Enforcers eyes widened.
The Priest's mouth went agape.
"That's ridiculous!" Coin snapped.
Leon didn't panic.
"Hear me out."
"No matter what you say I can't give that to you. Only an Emberlord could have it. It is dangerous in the wrong hands. Crown Aurex gave that to me and if he got to know I gave it to you, I will be thrown in Xaldros. That's too much of a risk. And you can't even use it. You have to at least have an Aurora tier skill of level four to handle its properties."
Leon stood from his chair as well.
"I will give you one thousand Paper lumens and a hundred acres of land from Solmire city. The heart of trading in Dwarkam."
"That relic is worth more than those combined."
"One thousand paper lumens per month, Emberlord."
"That's…" Coin hesitated.
But instantly shook his head the next second.
"It's still too dangerous. What will I say to Crown Aurex? What will I do in the Full Merge? What would I do if a Pyrelord asked for it? My fate will be worse than death."
"The Pyrelords already have a relic of their own. They won't ask you to show them yours. You can give some excuse to Crown Aurex. No Crowns actually look for it. They just do it out of obligation. About Full Merge, you are strong enough to protect yourself. Besides, you won't be alone.
And even if things go out of hand without the relic in Full Merge, then just shift everything to the slums. Think about it, Emberlord. You keeping the relic won't change anything. But if you give it to me, you will see the fruits of your act."
Only Leon and the Emberlord engaged in the conversation and the others simply watched them.
They felt they were watching something forbidden. They shouldn't be hearing about this.
Now they understood why Leon asked for the Enforcers to go away.
And they wished they should have obliged.
All of them remained silent as it wasn't their place to speak. Moreover, they were scared about the decision the Emberlord would make.
"How will I benefit from giving you the relic? I am only digging my grave if I do that."
Leon came closer to Coin.
"First I will kill that Myreth bitch, then I will become the fourth Crown, then I will make you a Grand Pyre. I can't use the relic but my father can. He will make it possible. Think about it. You have to serve for many more years to reach the Pyrelord rank. And I am promising you the highest position directly.
You can't misuse the relic, but we can. You already know that many Halocrats are fighting for that fourth Crown position, and if someone else won then you won't rise in rank. But if I won, you certainly will."
Coin gulped.
He drank the glass of water on his table and sat on his chair once more.
Leon stayed in front of the man.
The Emberlord rested his elbows on his knees and his head on his knuckles.
He constantly tapped his foot.
Silence remained in the office as all eyes gawked at Coin.
"Five more years of service would make me a Pyrelord. Three years, if I executed some heretics and infidels."
The Emberlord muttered but everyone could hear him.
But they said nothing as Coin was talking to himself.
"I am officially allowed to give the relic for one day and only to those who can't use it to its full extent. I will be skinned alive, riftborns would feast on me, or something as worse as humanly possible."
Coin pressed his forehead.
"But that said…"
The Emberlord raised his head.
He looked deep inside Leon's bronze eyes.
"Write the promise you gave me in your blood right now."
